An exploration of service and product design, WSTED, a circular mask waste service is an output of our studio research focused on waste futures — reimagining sustainable solutions that can support and reinforce resilience in cities our local communities.
Part service, and experience, WSTED aims to create a more sustainable, convenient, and community-driven alternative to traditional waste management through a circular waste service model using disposable face masks as the case study focus. This service prioritizes the principles of access, materiality, community, and convenience with the aim to reinforce sustainable behaviors for everyday community residents -- nudging our communities towards a more resilient waste management future.
PPE was seen as essential for preventing the spread of COVID-19…Then production exploded—and now the litter is an inescapable consequence.
